Best Nerf Guns of 2023 (14 Must-Have Blasters Reviewed)

Roundup of the Best Nerf Guns to buy.
Updated on 11/16/23

What is the best Nerf gun? It depends. In the world of Nerf, there are a lot of “bests.”

There are few things that bring more joy than showering foamy hellfire down upon your enemies in a good old-fashioned Nerf gun battle! Nerf guns have been around for over 30 years and are some of the most popular toys in the world—and for a good reason.

Do you want a foam-slinging beast that holds hundreds of rounds of ammo? Or maybe you want to run and gun and require a blaster that’s a little lighter? How about a battery-powered blaster that lets you hold down the trigger and slings walls of foam? Or maybe you want a nerf blaster that rockets darts at insane speeds with pinpoint accuracy.

But fear not; we’ve spent hours upon hours researching and testing Nerf guns and have broken them down into 14 categories with a “best” blaster to top each category—updated for 2024!

That being said, if you want to skip the reading and just buy an incredible blaster that ticks all of the boxes, there is one that tops our list!

The overall best Nerf gun is the Nerf Rival Nemesis MXVII-10K. The Nemesis is a crazy powerful and a fully motorized blaster that rockets rounds in full auto at an insane 100 FPS. It holds 100 rounds in its massive hopper, can be upgraded with a rechargeable battery (increasing its performance), and has very few drawbacks.

With that, let’s dive into the other blasters on this list!

1. Nerf Rival Nemesis MXVII-10K

Best Nerf Gun Overall

nerf rival nemesis mxvii 10k blaster

Specifications:

  • Ammo Capacity: 100 rounds
  • Velocity: 90 feet per second
  • Fire-Rate: 4 rounds per second
  • Range: 100 feet
  • Powered: 6 D batteries / Lipo
  • Colors: Red and blue

If you want to send your enemies running for the hills with a little brown spot tarnishing their underpants, the Nerf Rival Nemesis MXVII-10K will endow fear and much more.

With an innovative ammo system and over-the-top performance, I can easily recommend the Nemesis as the best Nerf gun of 2024. It also made its way to the top of various other lists, including the best Nerf Rival blasters and the best battery-powered blasters.

The Rival Nemesis can rocket foam balls at an insane 90 – 100 fps (or 120 fps if running on a lipo battery. It also has a fire rate of 4 rounds per second and an average range of about 100 feet.

It shoots a unique type of ammo called the High-Impact Rival Round. These tiny foam balls have a porous design (similar to a golf ball) which creates turbulent air around the ball—allowing them to fly faster and more precisely than traditional darts.

The Nemesis has a massive top-mounted hopper rated to hold 100 rounds (but 110 rounds fit without experiencing feeding issues). This hopper is also a breeze to load; dump a handful of balls into the top of the hopper, close the hatch, and continue spraying! You do have to give the blaster a little shake now and then to help the rounds feed, but that’s the only practical drawback of this blaster.

The blaster runs off six D cell batteries, but you can upgrade it with a rechargeable lipo battery—which increases its fps and range, not to mention a great investment over single-charge batteries! It’s also fully ambidextrous and be purchased in two color schemes: Team Red or Team Blue (my favorite).

Overall, the Nemesis is the perfect blaster. It’s lightweight, agile, powerful, accurate, and has a ton of ammo. Unless you’re a small child (or have the pain tolerance of one), you can’t go wrong with this Rival blaster.

Reasons to Buy:

  • Large 100-round ammo capacity
  • Battery-powered & high rate of fire
  • High 90+ FPS and a 100-foot range
  • Lightweight and handles well

Reasons to Avoid:

  • It uses a gravity-fed hopper that won’t fire inverted
  • Hopper needs to be shaken every so often
  • More expensive option

  • Ammo Capacity: 6 darts
  • Velocity: 75 feet per second
  • Fire-Rate: 4 rounds per second
  • Range: 80 feet
  • Powered: Spring-powered
  • Colors: Blue with orange

If you want to inflict misery on your enemies but not your wallet, the Nerf Elite 2.0 Commander is an easy choice for the best budget-friendly Nerf gun!

Averaging about $13, the Commander is a spring-powered blaster with a six-round rotating cylinder. It comes with 12 Nerf Elite darts (six blue and six orange) but is also compatible with higher-performance waffle head darts.

It’s primed using an easy-to-grab slide on the top of the blaster and fully supports slam firing (hold down the trigger and continuously prime the blaster to rapid-fire darts).

For the price, the performance is very respectable. It shoots standard Nerf Elite darts at about 75 FPS with an average range of about 80 feet. If slam-fired, you can rocket foam at about four darts per second.

  • Velocity: 100 feet per second
  • Fire-Rate: 8 rounds per second
  • Range: 100 feet
  • Powered: Included lipo battery
  • Colors: White

Named after the Greek god who gifted humanity fire, the Nerf Rival Prometheus MXVIII-20K is among the biggest, nastiest, and most overkill blasters you can buy. This thing is a monster, and I’m sure whoever designed it probably belongs in a straight-jacket—if they’re not already.

The Prometheus has a massive hopper that holds an insane 200 Rival Rounds (small foam balls). Loading the hopper is a piece of cake. Open the top hatch and dump handfuls of balls into the blaster. Slam the hatch close, and you’re ready to fling foam.

It comes in one color scheme (Spec Ops White), which in my opinion, is absolutely gorgeous–like if a Lamborghini and monster truck had a child. But the Prometheus isn’t just a big shiny object that holds a lot of ammo. It’s also insanely powerful.

The Prometheus is fully automatic and can rocket balls at 100 feet per second with a fire rate of 8 rounds per second (making it one of the fastest-firing blasters you can buy). It also has a range of 100+ feet.

And just when you thought it wouldn’t get better, it also comes with a rechargeable lipo battery pack. That’s right; batteries are included!

The Trion is a spring-powered beauty that shoots exclusively half-length darts and is designed in a unique way that allows you to customize the performance using spring spacers.

Without any spacers installed, it can shoot darts at a jaw-dropping 130+ FPS. But, if you want even more power, you can add one spacer for up to 160 FPS or both included spacers for a blazing 200+ FPS.

But the best part, adding and removing these spacers requires no tools and takes no time at all!

Not only is the Trion packed with power, but it also comes with multiple Picatinny rails and cut holes that are M-LOK rail compatible. The front angled grip feels great in hand, but if you want to add your own grip, it can be easily removed to reveal another Picatinny rail.

Nerf Guns Buying Guide

With so many different Nerf guns on the market today, it can be overwhelming to choose the one right for you.

In this section, we’ll provide a comprehensive guide to help you understand the different aspects and characteristics of Nerf guns and how to choose the foam-flinging companion that is best for you!

Type of Blaster

When it comes to Nerf guns, there are two main types: spring-powered and battery-powered (flywheel). Each type has its own strengths and weaknesses, so it’s important to choose the one that best suits your playstyle.

Spring-Powered

Spring-powered blasters are simple, reliable, and will give you the classic Nerf experience. They require manual priming, usually through pump action, pistol slide, or a pull-handle.

The performance of any spring-powered blaster will depend on the strength of the spring. Most Nerf guns use relatively weak springs, and you can often find upgraded springs on Amazon or mod sites like Out of Darts.

Battery-Powered

Battery-powered nerf guns are ideal for players who prefer semi-automatic or fully-automatic blasters. These guns use a motor to spin two flywheels, which propel the darts down the barrel with incredible speed and accuracy.

The voltage running through a battery-powered blaster is usually what determines how powerful it is. Some blasters, like the Rival Perses, can be “overclocked” with bigger batteries to make them fire faster (FPS).

Ammo Type

While there are tons of different types of foam blaster ammo used in various different blasters, most fall under one of four main ammo types.

  • Full-Length Darts: These are the traditional, classic Nerf darts that come with most blasters. They are 2.75 inches in length (7cm) and are made of foam with a plastic tip. They are great for all-around play but may not be the best choice for high-powered blasters.
  • Half-Length Darts: As the name suggests, these darts are half the length of full-length darts. They are more compact and aerodynamic, making them a good choice for high-powered blasters.
  • Rival Rounds (Foam Balls): These are designed for the Nerf Rival line of blasters and are made of a dense foam material. They are great for players who want a little more punch in their shots and also great for indoors, as they are less likely to damage things.
  • Gel Beads: These are a new type of ammo that has become increasingly popular in the past year. They are made of a gel material that saturates when soaked in water. This type of ammo is not reusable.

Final Thoughts

The world of Nerf guns is diverse and full of different options to suit different needs and preferences. Whether you’re looking for a powerful, fully motorized blaster or a lightweight, quick-firing option, there’s something for everyone.

With the latest advancements in technology and design, the best Nerf guns of 2023 offer an exciting and fun way to engage in foam-slinging battles. According to our research, the Nerf Rival Nemesis is the top pick for the best Nerf gun right now, offering unparalleled power and performance.

So, get ready to gear up for the ultimate Nerf battle!
