Updated on 01/08/24

The Morse code alphabet forever revolutionized the way in which we communicate with the world and slung us into the modern age as we know it.

It is the grandfather of the telephone, the internet, LOLs, and poop emojis.

The purpose of this guide is to teach you the entire Morse code alphabet in a simple and easy-to-remember way.

We’ll start off with a deep dive into each letter, how it sounds, and a visual mnemonic aid to help memorize it and keep it memorized! Then, at the bottom of this guide, there is a complete Morse code chart that you can save for a quick reference of all the Morse code letters.

Also, if you are new to Morse code and want to send some messages in the code, be sure to check out our Morse Code Encoder!

Let’s get to it and, once again, learn our ABCs!

Morse Code Alphabet

To start, the entire Morse code alphabet is made up of two symbols—dots and dashes.

  • Dots are represented by periods or circles and indicate a quick and rapid sound. It is represented by the sound “di or dit.
  • Dashes, on the other hand, are represented by longer symbols such as hyphens or short lines and indicate a slower sound. It is represented by the sound “dah.”

The timing of dashes is three times longer than dots. So for example, if your dot is 0.5 seconds long, then your dash will be 1.5 seconds long.

Check out the audio below to hear the difference between the “dot” and the “dash.”

By joining these dots and dashes together in various combinations we can produce codes that represent different letters of the alphabet.

Morse Code Alphabet Mnemonics – Letter By Letter

One of the best ways to learn and remember Morse code letters is to use visual mnemonics. These aids are very powerful if you write out the letter on a piece of paper and practice speaking it with “dits” and “dah.”

All of the memory aids below are from the Girl Guiding Handbook published in 1918.
