Averages 102 FPS; High ROF, SMG class Rival blaster w/ rechargeable battery and charger.
    5 Stars
Averages 102 FPS; High ROF, SMG class Rival blaster w/ rechargeable battery and charger.
My ProChrono Digital chronograph measured the speed of the Rival Rounds fired by this stock Nerf Rival Perses blaster at an average of 102 feet per second (FPS) using Nerf Rival Rounds (it is not compatible with shooting any Nerf Elite darts). The standard average velocity of a Nerf Rival blaster is 100 FPS so the velocity of the Perses’ shots at peak rev are right where they are supposed to be. I had some issues trying to determine if the rest of the shots fired during a full auto stream were any weaker, but I have determined it to be slower by only a bit at most (98 FPS). The real deal is the ROF (Rate Of Fire, or in this case, Balls per Second/ BPS), which is 8 BPS on average. My tests came up with mostly 7 BPS, but I did get 9 balls once (I sprayed balls during “One, One-Thousand.” Overall, I found the ROF was not always consistent since gravity and the conveyor belt system do not always get each ball moving in the desired direction 100% the time, especially if the hopper is overstuffed and there are balls still bunched up or stuck at the back of the hopper. I don’t think this blaster is much shorter (about 23 inches) than the Nerf Rival Nemesis (28 & 1/2 inches), and while it is somewhat lighter, it is still a solid and weighty piece of plastic that has considerable heft to it. At the same time, the hopper is half the capacity of a Nemesis’ hopper as a lower-profile SMG (SubMachine gun) class blaster. The Perses pros are in it’s mobility due to it’s compact size and lower center of gravity design. Not to overlook it’s equally impressive effective range due to the high FPS paired with a higher full-auto ROF. The large transparent plastic panel on top of the Perses is one giant hopper door that can be popped open from right to left, but you will need to secure it closed using two hands or at least near both ends of the door. You see, it spans 2/3rds the length of the blaster and can be refilled faster than most other Rival blasters. It may just be the largest Nerf ammo refill door in existence. The entire hopper can be jettisoned by pulling on the orange claw-like protrusion on the left side of the Perses. I could see inexperienced players trying to “prime” the blaster during the heat of battle and losing their ammunition instead (lol), but in all honesty the decision to design the claw-lever is unusual and actually seems more troublesome to me. The Perseus was actually shipped with a piece of cardboard wrapped around this claw part for extra protection, and when I say protection, I mean protecting whatever it might hit during shipments because it is a pretty solid claw. This packing countermeasure demonstrates that Nerf is aware about this issue; I hope no one ever falls on this blaster, because if that ever were to happen the claw-lever sticking out towards the body of a right-handed user can definitely dig into them and probably injure him/her. Anyway, moving on: If anyone cares to notice, the hopper has a sling mount on it, perhaps for the user to be able to store more Perses hoppers for even quicker reloads. The other two sling mount locations are 1.) under the pistol grip, and 2.) under the barrel. The battery release lever is a smooth-operating 2-stage button and lever combination under the battery (in front of the pistol grip). The included battery is labeled as a Rechargeable 9.6v NiMH 1500mAH, and the battery charger is also included. It took under 2 hours to complete my first charge. There is a tiny under-barrel Nerf Rival tactical rail for Nerf’s lone flashlight/ grip attachment (it would be nice if Hasbro decided to have Nerf make more Rival tactical rail accessories). The Jam access door is a clever sliding door on top and at the front of the blaster, accessible via a cheap feeling plastic button. Naturally for an electronic Nerf blaster, the Perses has electronic locks and will not work until all doors are properly closed and the ambidextrous safety lever lock located above the main trigger is disengaged. Below the main trigger is the acceleration button (rev trigger) and it kind of feels heavy to me, but it is still intuitive and does it’s job well. In conclusion, making a Rival blaster that comes with a rechargeable battery just makes sense. It worked with the Rival Prometheus, and I’m actually glad the trend is continuing with the Perses. The niche of the mobile runner in CQB (Close Quarter Battle) game modes has been elevated with this SMG class blaster, and I for one am satisfied with it’s quick pivoting handling and high-ROF performance. More rapid-fired balls in your opponent’s face and in a shorter amount of time? Yes please. Perhaps more blasters that can use this same battery pack will surface in the near future? Well, this is entirely up to Hasbro. I guess we will just have to wait and see how the Perses sells (so in reality, it’s up to you/ the customers). I give it Five Stars [for now], I will return to update this review if I discover anything that alters my opinion and rating (i.e. something interesting, terrible, or it breaks, etc.).Update (10-16-19) I painted my Perses’ shell with an Ocean Kryptek Hyrdographic pattern. Take a look to see what it looks like painted, it is the last photo.
