I got it for competitive purposes, and think it works best as a secondary blaster. When you are reloading your main blaster and an opponent comes after you, one shot from the SledgeFire pretty well ensures that your opponent will get tagged out. The spread of darts is fairly random (much like actual buckshot from a shotgun), sometimes working against you, but usually helping you hit your target.
It's not for mowing down crowds of "zombies" with full-auto fire; it's more of a point-and-click interface. So, for those who look at this blaster and wonder "Why would anyone use this?", here's some pros:
- A ton of fun
- Very likely to get your opponent in one shot
- Friendly to modders (LOTS of potential there; for instance, you can make the stock removable so that you're left with a shotgun-pistol)
- Fans of the blaster have made 3D printed shells that shoot single darts, MEGA darts and even Mega Missiles, so you have options that most other blasters don't
As for cons, the price, size, and lack of availability of the shells are all I can really think of (the latter has since been rectified). Amazon is the cheapest place to get the shells as of summer 2016 (I've looked EVERYWHERE else). I recommend grabbing them when you see them for anything under $9 - this is already half the price they're going for elsewhere.
Check out the BoomCo Tri-Blast if you want a small pistol that does the 3-shot thing - it uses different ammo, but makes a great alternative to the SledgeFire in dart wars and similar NERF events where a huge variety of darts are flying around.
I recommend this blaster!
Pros:
Has a nice range if not an excellent range.
The power of the impact is amazing. (So I cut out 16 of the cardboard targets using the stencils and I set them all up. When I fired the gun BLAMMO!! About 13 targets flew into the air and this was just from one shot.)
The whole reloading and unloading mechanism is fun.
The ammo shells pop out so you can take them out with ease.
Con:
When you pull back the gun to unload it's a bit clunky.
In all seriousness the Sledgefire shoots about 30ft indoors, and sometimes the darts go a little wild. I wouldn't use this outside if you're like a serious Nerf person, but as a back up for close-range this thing is pretty cool, and the loading and unloading is just fun.

Stepping through a mine field of Lego, barefoot, at 3 am is a delightful experience compared to this beast of a gun. Imagine my delight when I am loading the washing machine and my son plants one of these hornet like darts on my backside. Or when I am watching a film and one of these darts come flying at my legs, the shock from suck a force rivals childbirth. I would advise parents to wear Kevlar body suits with extra padding for your "sensitive" areas.... at all times. All in all I hate this gun but my son loves it.
