Updated on 03/13/24

Nobody likes running out of ammo in a Nerf war. What is worse than being left defenseless and pelted with darts while you search for darts to reload?

I’m here to tell you there is a simple solution to this problem that many face daily — get a Nerf blaster with a higher ammo capacity!

Can you imagine being able to keep firing in a Nerf war game while your foes have to reload multiple times?

This guide covers the answer to “which Nerf blasters hold the most darts and ammo in general?“.

You will also find the specs of each of these guns to help you find exactly what you need to know if you consider getting one.

What Nerf Gun Holds The Most Ammo?

The Nerf Rival Prometheus MXVII-20K holds the most ammo of any Nerf gun, with the highest ammo capacity of 200 Rival rounds. This automatic battery-powered blaster is automatic and holds the included 200 rounds in a gravity-fed hopper. The Prometheus fires at a rate of 8 rounds per second, which means you can fire for close to 30 seconds straight without reloading.

Nerf Rival Prometheus MXVIII-20K

The Nerf Rival Prometheus reigns supreme with the ability to wield the most ammo straight out of the box. You can’t beat 200 included rounds that shoot with a solid zing.

It was released in 2018 and named after the Greek god of fire. It doesn’t start fires, but it has the capability of flinging eight rounds a second.

This big gun shoots at over 90 feet per second and is one of the hardest-hitting Nerf blasters!

The transparent plastic hopper has a large door that makes it easy to scoop the ammo in and makes the reloads quicker than you might think.

An occasional jam may hamper the mood but is easy to clear as the whole hopper is removable to expose it.

One of the best things about this gun is the included 9.6V rechargeable battery. Think of how many little batteries’ lives were saved, not to mention the time saved installing them.

You also won’t be foiled by an unexpected dead battery, as a power indicator on the grip lets you know when a recharge is needed.

If you really want to get crazy with some attachments, this gun has two tactical rails compatible with Rival equipment.

Naturally, this blaster’s price tag is higher, likely because it is still one of the biggest Nerf guns.

However, it is the king and includes a lot of quality bang for the buck.

What Nerf Gun Holds the Most Darts?

The Nerf N-Strike Elite Hail-Fire Blaster has the highest Nerf dart capacity at 144 darts. It can hold the most darts of any Nerf gun but includes only four 6 – round magazines, giving it a 24-dart space out of the box. To achieve the Hail Fire’s largest Nerf dart capacity, it will require an additional purchase of eight 18-round magazines.

Nerf N-Strike Elite Hail-Fire Blaster

The Nerf N-Strike Elite Hail-Fire was released in 2012 and quickly made its presence felt in the world of Nerf.

With some additional purchases, you can bring its dart capacity up to 144 darts, but with that catch. It only includes four 6-dart magazines when it has spots for eight total magazines.

Understandably, the additional mags and darts would have likely increased the price to a scary one.

The bigger the capacity of magazines, the worse it also functions. The max you can use is eight 18-dart magazines; thankfully, you don’t have to pump before each shot.

This semi-auto monster brings an intimidation factor that is matched by few.

After emptying a mag, you will have to push the front handle forward and back to rotate to the next full one.

The Prometheus is powered by 4 AA batteries that aren’t included in a new-in-box purchase.

One N-strike tactical rail below the barrel also allows you to make it, even more, intimidating with an attachment.

With the large design and size, this gun is also a very costly one, especially as they get harder to find. It is kind of a piece of Nerf History with its high fire rate, large size, and ammo capacity.

The Hail-Fire is a discontinued Nerf blaster, meaning they no longer make them. However, you can still find them for sale on sites like Amazon or eBay.

Though there are a few downsides to the Hail Fire, it will bring a smile to your face every time you break it out.

Specs:

  • Ammo Type: Nerf Elite Darts
  • Ammo Capacity: 144 darts
  • Velocity: 70 fps (feet per second)
  • Fire-Rate: 4 darts per second
  • Powered: 4 AA Batteries (not included)

Reasons to Buy:

  • Largest Dart Ammo Capacity
  • Accurate Single Fire
  • Smooth Trigger Pull

Reasons to Avoid:

  • Expensive
  • Inaccurate & low fps during fast firing
  • Slow Reload

Conclusion

I recommend the Prometheus over the Hail-fire, even though they are both monsters in their own right.

The Hail-fire is a bit older, harder to find now, and will end up costing a lot to get it to its max ammo capacity.

Even if you get the extended magazines for the Hail-Fire, it gets clunky and doesn’t function as well as the Prometheus. The latter is also one of the best Rival Nerf guns because it has everything you need right out of the box for dominating and being feared on the Nerf battlefield.

Did I mention the latter will also take way less time to reload with its big hopper door? You might have some major regrets while trying to load all the Hail-Fire magazines.

That said, they are both pretty awesome and a lot of fun to shoot!

Happy Nerfing!
